Michelle Rhee has used tough love to improve our nation’s schools for over 18 years. She started her career with Teach for America in Baltimore. In 1997, she founded The New Teacher Project (TNTP) to improve teacher hiring and train qualified candidates for difficult schools.  TNTP has placed 23,000 such candidates in schools nationwide. By 2007, Rhee was gaining national attention, and Mayor Adrian Fenty put her in charge of the D.C. Public Schools.  In 2010, she formed her current organization, a 501(c)4 organization based in Washington, D.C. called StudentsFirst. While Rhee has caused some waves in the education community along the way by laying off teachers without regard to seniority (the New York Daily News called her “Public Enemy #1”), education experts like former New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein faith in her abilities. Said Klein: “Michelle Rhee will bring demonstrated excellence backed by enormous energy and commitment to the national discussion on school reform.”

  • There are not even words to describe how awesome Michelle Rhee is! FINALLY a woman who will not only help her own children’s school get better… “Sorry Principal.. You gotta go!” But she has stuck her neck out to make ALL schools better for ALL children! Really, a true American Hero if you ask me! <3 (I only wish she had been in my children's district before I had a teacher get violent and shove my 3rd grade daughter into her chair for helping another student log in to her computer!) We homeschool now after the Principal did nothing to change the teacher's behavior. Way to GO MICHELLE RHEE!!!!!!!
