One of the country's first gynecologists, Abdi, a 64-year-old mother of three opened her clinic doors to all victims of the Somalian government crash in 1991, treating patients ranging from shooting victims to the starving. News of Abdi's work spread fast and before long, thousands were streaming in for treatment. In response, Abdi began buying land and bit by bit, built a village for those seeking her help. These days, Adbi is the head of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation, a camp that provides housing for more than 90,000 disenfranchised peoples, most of whom are women and children. Dr. Abdi extends food, clean water, and medical treatment to her makeshift "family" with the help of her two daughters, both of who are now doctors themselves. The camp currently provides education to 850 of the 27,000 children within its borders. Its mission: to build "an island of hope in a sea of violence."
