Have I got an momination for you! Rachel de Azevedo Coleman does it all--she is a talented singer/songwriter, an amazing mom to 3 beautiful daughters, wife to her wonderful husband Aaron, granddaughter of Alyce King of the King Sisters, daughter of Lex de Azevedo (who served as a musical director for The Sonny & Cher Show, Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five and The Osmonds) but is best known as the co-creator and star of Signing Time! Inspired by the desire to teach children American Sign Language so they could communicate with her daughter Leah, who was born deaf, Rachel and her sister Emilie Brown developed a series of shows that have appeared on Public Television and have been purchased by thousands of people all over the world. Rachel is my hero because she is tireless in her dedication to her family including Leah, Lucy who has spina bifida and cerebral palsy, and her "newest" daughter Laura who was given up for adoption at birth but recently reunited with Rachel and her family when she turned 18. Rachel, Leah and her cousin Alex have helped me learn and teach sign language to my grandchildren and my students with special needs. I wish there was room to tell you more about her adventures (which include trips to Africa to work with schools for the deaf and Emmy nominations) but you can read more about Rachel on her blog at http://www.rachelcoleman.com/about/ and Signing Time at www.signingtime.com. I promise, you will be glad you did!

  • Rachel truly is a phenomenal woman/mother. If there was a superhero category for mothers, she would be SuperMom!! Of course in lieu of a cape, she’d have her orange jacket!

Her story, blogs have touched many. I wish I were half the mom that Rachel is. She really is the example of what we should all strive for!

  • You can see Rachel’s dedication to children after watching one episode of Signing Time. Then when you find out her personal story you will be overwhelmed with inspiration. As an added bonus the woman can sing….really well. This is the only show that I look forward to sitting down with my kids to watch. We have made it our only tv time. My kids know her by name : )

  • Rachel changed our lives for the better. Not only did she make learning to sign fun for our son who had a massive stroke to his language side, but because of her program, Signing Time, he also learned to read and talk. He is now in regular 2nd grade classes doing regular work, and reading above level…and he still loves signing! Because Rachel opened up Signing Time Academy, I now bring sign language instruction to the families of my own community, and have seen many other signing miracles. And, it is all thanks to Rachel.

  • Rachel is a rockstar. Amazing mom to her own kids, but also helps me be a better mom to mine. Teaching a 8 month old to communicate his needs to me (ie: Milk, hurt, eat) was such a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. It eliminated so much guess work and I was able to get my son what he needed, when he needed it. My son is now two and while he is constantly speaking, sometimes I’m not sure what he’s saying…so thankful last week for the watermelon sign. :-) Hope she wins, she is more than deserving.

  • We’re a big fan of Rachel’s too. We have 4 young sons, one of which has a severe hearing loss. Because of Rachel and Signing Time, our son can communicate very well. ASL was his first language and it gave him access to spoken English. Now the two languages together create a whole language and mode of communication for him and our entire family. So thankful for Rachel and all she does to serve others like us.

  • OMG!! we LOVE BST & Rachel. We will be seeing her again this month when she comes to Seattle. We have two hearing grandkids, (2 & 11mo). BST has been instrumental in their ablility to communicate with us so early on. Our 2 yr old can recite, sighn and knows all the phonics of the alphabet. Our 10 mo old is not talking yet but can sign up a storm. They LOVE the DVD’s and books. One big vote for Rachel from our house!!!!!! We appreciate you!!

  • Had the privilege of seeing Rachel and Hopkins perform at the Buddy Walk in MA last year. Although our daughter is now 6 and speaking, she will still pull out the Signing Time videos for fun.

Rachel and her family are an inspiration and I’m delighted to vote for her!

  • Rachel is AMAZING! There aren’t many moms who can take a life experience and use it to teach the world. She has had a tremendous impact on my childrens development. I an completely convinced that her videos were the reason my daughter was able to read at 18 months and they made our lives easier by giving her a way to communicate with me before she could speak. Way to go Rachel!! Thanks for everything you do.

  • I would vote a thousand times over for this mama. She has undoubtedly changed mine and my childrens lives!
Unfortunately, I don’t have a FB acct so I will just have to spread the word and hope that others can actually vote where I can’t.

  • I feel that Rachel is deserving of any award she can get. He method of teaching sign language is outstanding, and very enjoyable. I have bought a lot of the DVD’s, flash cards, and books and have enjoyed learning from them with my granddaughter.

  • Not only has she changed her life to make the lives of her daughters wonderful by working to give her daughters every opportunity any child without a disability would have she works hard to help other parents do the same with the programs she has developed.

As a special education provider I am amazed with her personal drive as a parent to give her children tools to help them be sucessful in all aspects of their lives. Where Rachel goes above and beyond is how she is concerned with giving the same opportunities to others. Thank you for being such s great example!

  • Rachel’s investment of love in Signing Time has given our family the greatest joy. Our daughter has Down Syndrome, and at 2 1/2 years has only 5 spoken words but over 300 signs! Rachel has allowed us to know who our daughter is – her needs, wants, likes, dislikes – in a way that wouldn’t be possible with only 5 words. Words cannot express what an incredible gift Rachel has given us.

  • Rachel has made a huge impact on our lives and how we interact with our children. I am so thankful she saw the need for signing time and jumped forth with her sister to fill it.

  • Rachel has made a huge impact on my life and that of my family. I provide daycare for my grandchildren and by the time my grandson was 1 year old not only could he do over 300 signs he understood and used them continually. Often he would see something and sign it before I even noticed it. He was able to communicate his feelings and wants. He knew all the farm and zoo animals as well as the fish and pets. He knew all his colors and his alphabet. Signing Time has been such a blessing in communicating with him. I will be forever grateful to Rachel for all the work she has done and continues to do in making communication easier with our children. I highly recommend her for since she has changed the world of communication with little ones.

  • Rachel is one Fearless Ma~~~~who has not only built her amazing efforts to inspire the lives of others to sign while never losing focus on her own family, but has now a following of parents who inspire other parents to use ASL singing/signing efforts to bond with our children who crave the knowledge that ALL parents should offer them early in they’re development. ~~~THANK YOU RACHEL & Family~~~

  • A Mom Who Changed Our World! Rachel de Azevedo Coleman of signing time has become a significant part of our world. From early morning rising to night time- she fills our home with signing time–DVD’s-books-online teaching. My son has Down Syndrome and teaching is a challenge, but Rachel with her love&encouragement makes it possible!! Her shows are family centered and able to keep my child’s attention. His face lights up whenever she sends us a new email with a signing time video word for the day or an encouraging story for mommy to read. I vote for Rachel!!!
